BMW X3

Engine Oil

General Information

The engine oil consumption depends on driving style and conditions. Oil consumption can increase due to:

  • Sporty driving
  • Break-in of the engine
  • Idling of the engine
  • Use of non-approved engine oil grades

Regularly check the engine oil level after refueling. The vehicle is equipped with electronic oil measurement, which has two measuring principles:

  • Status display
  • Detailed measurement

Electronic Oil Measurement

Status Display

The engine oil level is monitored electronically while driving and shown on the Control Display. If the oil level reaches the minimum, a check control message is displayed.

Requirements: A current measured value is available after approximately 30 minutes of driving. For frequent short trips, perform a detailed measurement regularly.

Displaying the Engine Oil Level

  1. "Vehicle info"
  2. "Vehicle status"
  3. "Engine oil level"

Engine Oil Level Display Messages

Different messages appear depending on the engine oil level:

  • Engine oil level too low: Add engine oil within the next 125 miles/200 km to prevent engine damage.
  • Too much engine oil: Have the vehicle checked immediately; surplus oil can lead to engine damage.

Detailed Measurement

The detailed measurement checks the engine oil level via a scale.

Requirements:

  • Vehicle on level road
  • Steptronic transmission in N or P, accelerator not pressed
  • Engine running at operating temperature

Steps to perform detailed measurement:

  1. "Vehicle info"
  2. "Vehicle status"
  3. "Measure engine oil level"
  4. "Start measurement" – takes approximately 1 minute

Adding Engine Oil

Switch off the ignition and safely park the vehicle before adding engine oil. Only add oil when the instrument cluster message appears. The quantity to add is indicated in the message.

Important: Add oil within the next 125 miles/200 km to avoid engine damage. Do not add too much oil; if overfilled, have the vehicle checked immediately.

Protect children: Keep oil, grease, and other fluids out of reach of children and observe warnings on containers.

Engine Oil Types to Add

  • No oil additives: Additives may damage the engine.
  • Viscosity grades: Use only SAE 0W-40, SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-40, or SAE 5W-30. Using other grades may cause malfunctions or engine damage.
