Nissan Qashqai

Stop/Start System Overview [Model: J12-U]

The Stop/Start System is designed to prevent unnecessary fuel consumption, reduce exhaust emissions, and minimize noise during a journey.

Activating the Stop/Start System

  • Manual Transmission: Bring the vehicle to a complete stop, remain at idle in N (Neutral), and release the clutch pedal.
  • Xtronic Transmission: Bring the vehicle to a complete stop and either depress the brake pedal or shift into N (Neutral) or P (Park).
  • If Automatic Brake Hold is turned ON, you can remove your foot from the brake pedal once the green Automatic Brake Hold indicator light illuminates. The engine will not restart automatically.

Restarting the Engine

  • Manual Transmission: Depress the clutch pedal to shift into a forward or reverse gear; the engine restarts.
  • Xtronic Transmission:
    • If the green Automatic Brake Hold indicator light is on, shift into D (Drive) or R (Reverse) or press the accelerator to restart the engine.
    • If Automatic Brake Hold is off or not fitted, the engine restarts when you take your foot off the brake pedal.

Caution

  • At the end of a journey, stop the engine and turn off the ignition. Lock the vehicle as normal. Failure to turn off the ignition may result in a flat battery, as all electrical systems will remain active.

Normal Operation

The Stop/Start System automatically stops and restarts the engine when conditions are met. The Stop/Start indicator light will be lit when active.

Conditions Preventing Activation

The system or Coasting Stop/Start system (with Mild Hybrid Technology and Xtronic transmission only) will not activate under these conditions:

  • Engine idling without driving after being turned on
  • Low engine coolant temperature
  • Low battery capacity or extreme battery temperatures
  • Reduced brake servo vacuum
  • Engine bonnet open while engine running or turned on
  • Driver’s seatbelt not fastened or driver’s door open
  • Stop/Start System indicator blinking at low speed
  • Accelerator pedal depressed (Xtronic models)
  • Transmission in R (Reverse)
  • Fan speed control not OFF while airflow control is on front defogger (manual AC)
  • Front defogger switch on (automatic AC)
  • Stop/Start System OFF switch activated
  • Intelligent Key not detected
  • High power consumption or high altitude
  • [SNOW] or [OFF-ROAD] mode active (4WD models)
  • Vehicle moving on steep or non-level roads
  • Steering wheel operated (non-Mild Hybrid models)
  • Vehicle speed above 18 km/h (Coasting Stop/Start with Mild Hybrid)
  • Transmission not in D (Drive) position (Coasting Stop/Start with Mild Hybrid)
  • Pedestrian or vehicle detected by Intelligent Emergency Brake (if fitted)
  • ProPILOT Assist or ICC activated

Additional Notes

  • Activation may be delayed if the battery is discharged or if outside temperature is extreme.
  • Engine may not restart even if brake/clutch is pressed under certain conditions, e.g., transmission in P or N, parking brake engaged, ProPILOT Assist active.
  • Engine will restart without releasing brake/clutch under certain conditions, such as pressing the Stop/Start OFF switch, fan speed not OFF while front defogger is on, accelerator pedal depressed, or when ProPILOT Assist is active.

Important Considerations

  • The system will not activate when the vehicle bonnet is open.
  • Coasting Stop/Start with Mild Hybrid Technology will not activate if vehicle speed is above 18 km/h or transmission not in D.
